Book Review – A Coven of Her Own {Saskia Walker}

I hope you are having a wonderful day so far. Since today is about celebrating all types of women and their stories, I thought it would be fitting to talk about a book that celebrates a particular woman and her efforts to fight off evil with her the strength in herself and her magical abilities. If there is one thing that I can say about this book, it is that it is great for an escape from the trails and worries of everyday life, and that it is full of magic and love.

Thoughts:

So, reading this book was an experience! There are a few elements that I really enjoyed about this book, but there were also a few elements that could have been executed better.

I love the idea of a magical town with a local, wholesome coven and a heroine who is so sure of what she wants and is willing to risk it all for the people she loves. I loved Sunny as a main character, and I enjoyed seeing her grow and appreciate her magic. The members of the coven were also quite lovely – Celeste, however, I was unsure of for most of the book. I did not care much for Cullen in the beginning, but he grew on me over time.

The magical system was done well, and I personally thought that the connection between magic and nature was done beautifully. In some cases, however, like with the significance of matchmaking magic and time-travel, it was under-developed.

It should be noted that there was not much of a balance between the magical plot and the romance plot. The history of the coven war could have been explored further, and the villain more fleshed out. The romance plot happened too fast and unrealistically, not leaving much room for growth in their relationship, besides the persistent conflict (or rather, annoyance) of Cullen’s pride and old-age chivalry in the 21^st century, and his persistence on having a larger role in defeating the villain, Fox, when he could not. The sex scenes were enjoyable and added to the intensity of Sunny and Cullen’s relationship, but I would have liked to see more from them as a couple. They did have some sweet moments, but I just wanted more of those moments, to try and see them as a couple without all the drama that is tying them together.

The writing started out a bit stiff in the beginning, with some forced exposition in the dialogue, but got better soon after. It was immersive and flowed very well.

The ending, however, felt a little rushed. I would have liked to learn a bit more about Fox’s history and motivations besides his lust for power, as well as see more of a struggle in the final confrontation.

As an escapist kind of novel, this book was very entertaining.

Overall, though, this book was an enjoyable read.
